Sunday 10th August 2008
It's Sunday, and Bill is feeling unwell. After getting up early and watching the 4th day's play in the first Test Match between England and South Africa, Bill arranged a gift for Gary Brooker and Frankie's wedding anniversary. But, as Bill felt increasingly out of sorts during the day, had to call off from going to the anniversary party.
On Monday, and Bill feels worse, with him putting in a call to the doctor. Still feeling lousy, Bill packed up and was collected by the tour bus at 10am heading to Liverpool, along with the Rhythm Kings. A quick sound-check at the Echo Arena (Bill says the venue lived up to its name, being like the inside of a tin-can sound-wise, with lots of echo and reverb).
At 9:15, the band headed on stage and played to a warm crowd for 90 minutes, with a sizzling set including Sweet Soul Music (Beverley), Unchain My Heart (Dennis). Jump Jive & Wail (Albert), Too Late (Terry), Chicken Shack Boogie (Geraint), Show Me (Beverley), Louisiana 1927 (Dennis), I’m Ready (Albert), Honky Tonk Women (Bill), Race With The Devil (Terry), Harlem Shuffle (Beverley/Dennis), Johnny B. Goode (Geraint), Pouring Water On A Drowning Man (Dennis), You Never Can Tell (Bill), That's Rock & Roll (Albert), I Put A Spell On You (Beverley). Encores included Crying In The Rain (Albert/Beverley), and Tear It Up (Albert).
Following a stay in an icy-cold hotel room, Bill and the rest of the band headed back to London on Tuesday, July 15. Bill pointed out a release of the Cahors Blues Festival 2008 CD, which features the track You Never Can Tell by Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. There was also a photo of Bill in the French paper Grand Sud, along with an article about the festival.
After arriving home, and still feeling ropey, Bill started packing for the next three weeks, which will be spent in Monaco and France. On Wednesday, Bill and Terry loaded up the car early for the drive to Cahors in France -- and Bill was back to his usual self! After driving for nearly 13 hours, Bill and Terry arrived, and met up with the rest of the Rhythm Kings and Georgie Fame - just in time to open a decent bottle of French wine and a much-needed evening dinner.
